Pediatrician – Butaro Level II Teaching Hospital

About the role

The Pediatrician will deliver high‑quality clinical care to children and newborns at Butaro Level II Teaching Hospital while supporting teaching, mentorship, quality improvement and research activities. The position works closely with the University of Global Health Equity and PIH to strengthen pediatric health systems in rural Rwanda.

Key responsibilities

• Provide inpatient and outpatient care for neonates, infants, children and adolescents, including emergency stabilization and referral coordination.
• Lead daily pediatric ward rounds, participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and be on call for pediatric and neonatal services.
• Manage neonatal conditions in the neonatal unit, delivery room and maternity wards, promoting practices such as Kangaroo Mother Care and breastfeeding support.
• Collaborate with the pediatric oncology team to care for children with cancer and related medical issues.
• Deliver bedside and classroom teaching for medical students, residents, nurses and other trainees in partnership with UGHE.
• Participate in quality‑improvement projects, clinical audits, research and health‑systems strengthening initiatives.

Required profile

• Medical degree (MD or equivalent) with a recognized postgraduate qualification in Pediatrics.
• Valid medical license or eligibility for registration in Rwanda.
• Minimum five years of post‑specialization pediatric clinical experience, preferably in resource‑limited or rural settings.
• Experience in teaching, mentorship or supervision of health‑care trainees is desirable.
• Additional training in neonatology, pediatric emergency care, pediatric oncology or medical education is an advantage.
