Assistant Manager Reinsurance

About the role
The Assistant Manager Reinsurance will design, execute and govern Britam Rwanda’s reinsurance operational processes, treaty arrangements and regulatory frameworks. The role combines technical administration with strategic risk management to protect capital, limit counter‑party risk and ensure compliance with BNR Risk‑Based Supervision and Article 8 regulations.
Key responsibilities
- Lead alignment of the reinsurance framework with BNR Risk‑Based Supervision, prepare and submit mandatory regulatory returns and bordereaux, and monitor corporate exposures to satisfy Article 8 requirements.
- Monitor creditworthiness and structural exposures of reinsurers to mitigate default risk and optimise capital benefits under BNR capital rules.
- Drive case‑by‑case recovery timelines (target 30 days), manage and clear ageing reinsurance recovery backlogs.
- Support annual treaty renewal structuring, documentation and negotiations; evaluate and place facultative reinsurance for large risks while managing ASSAR non‑objection protocols.
- Direct verification and capture of technical data across core software (TIA) and financial packages (Oracle Financials), correcting ledger discrepancies.
- Liaise with Underwriting, Claims, Finance and Group Risk teams to resolve bottlenecks and provide analytical updates for executive and board oversight.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, insurance, finance, accounting, economics or a related quantitative field.
- Advanced professional qualifications in insurance (e.g., ACII, AIIK) or finance/actuarial papers are highly preferred.
- 4–6 years of progressive experience in commercial insurance, reinsurance brokerage or actuarial/underwriting environments with focus on corporate risk externalisation and treaty structures.
Required skills
- Strong reinsurance technical knowledge (treaty, facultative, bordereaux, recoveries).
- Understanding of insurance regulations and regulatory reporting (BNR/RBS).
- Financial reconciliation and data analysis (accuracy, ageing, recoveries).
- Monitoring and management of reinsurance recoveries and cash‑flows.
- Reinsurance accounting and control knowledge.
- Proficiency with insurance and finance systems (TIA, Oracle Financials).
