Technical Director

About the role

The Technical Director provides strategic leadership for the company’s technical functions, including underwriting, reinsurance, product development, risk assessment, and portfolio management. This senior role drives sustainable profitability, ensures robust risk management, and maintains compliance with regulatory and group governance requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute the technical strategy aligned with the group’s objectives, risk appetite and market opportunities.
• Provide advisory support to the CEO, executive team and Board on underwriting, reinsurance, product development and emerging industry trends.
• Lead underwriting governance to ensure effective risk selection, appropriate pricing and portfolio quality.
• Design and implement reinsurance strategies that optimise risk transfer and capital efficiency.
• Oversee reinsurance placement, treaty negotiations, facultative arrangements and monitor effectiveness.
• Drive product development and portfolio optimisation through market analysis and profitability reviews.
• Establish technical frameworks, policies and guidelines to strengthen underwriting discipline and risk management.
• Monitor portfolio performance using loss ratios, combined ratios, claims trends and pricing adequacy.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory directives, insurance laws and group standards.
• Lead technical transformation initiatives, including process improvement, automation and data‑driven decision making.
• Collaborate with Claims, Finance, Risk, Actuarial and Business Development teams to align the insurance value chain.
• Build and maintain relationships with regulators, reinsurers, brokers and other external stakeholders.
• Coach, mentor and develop technical teams to foster high performance.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in underwriting, reinsurance and product development within the insurance sector.
• Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and group governance frameworks.
• Proven ability to lead senior‑level strategic initiatives and drive profitable growth.
• Excellent analytical skills with a focus on portfolio performance metrics.
• Demonstrated leadership in building and developing high‑performing technical teams.
