Safety, Security and Safeguarding Coordinator

About the role

The Safety, Security and Safeguarding Coordinator works closely with the Regional Security Director to assess safety and security risks, implement Save the Children’s policies and standards, and drive systemic improvements across country programmes. The role also leads child safeguarding efforts in Rwanda and Burundi, ensuring compliance with Minimum Standards and protecting children in all activities.

Key responsibilities

• Lead child safeguarding across Rwanda and Burundi offices, identify risks to children, plan mitigation measures and assign responsible staff.
• Advocate for safeguarding policies at national level and provide guidance to emergency and humanitarian response teams.
• Establish and maintain country safeguarding networks, map service providers for children and keep local procedures up‑to‑date.
• Coach and support field focal points to improve safeguarding practice and promote safe programming.
• Work with programme development and operations teams to conduct safety and security assessments and recommend implementation actions.
• Ensure all programmes are designed, implemented and monitored through a safeguarding lens, including new proposals.
• Secure adequate budgeting for safeguarding activities in all new projects.
• Support the implementation of Save the Children’s Safety and Security Policy and Standards.

Required profile

• Level 3 child safeguarding contact – regular interaction with children or young people as part of programme work.
• Proven experience in safety, security and safeguarding within humanitarian or development contexts.
• Strong knowledge of child protection standards and ability to apply them in programme design.
• Excellent advocacy and communication skills to influence national stakeholders.
• Ability to coach staff, build networks and manage multi‑country coordination.
