Peri-operative Nurse

About the role

The Peri-operative Nurse delivers safe, high‑quality nursing care to patients undergoing surgical and invasive procedures. Working within a multidisciplinary surgical team, the nurse supports patients from pre‑operative assessment through intra‑operative advocacy to post‑operative monitoring.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive pre‑operative assessments, verify consent, investigations and safety checklists.
• Monitor vital signs and intra‑operative parameters, promptly responding to changes and escalating concerns.
• Assist surgeons, anesthetists and other providers during procedures, ensuring aseptic technique and patient safety.
• Provide post‑operative care including pain management, wound and drain management, and early detection of complications.
• Educate patients and families on peri‑operative processes, recovery expectations and discharge instructions.
• Maintain accurate peri‑operative documentation and complete surgical safety checklists.
• Participate in adverse event reporting, root‑cause analysis and continuous quality‑improvement initiatives.
• Support sterilization, maintenance and inventory management of surgical instruments and equipment.
• Mentor new staff and students during clinical rotations and contribute to in‑service training.
