International Consultant – AfCFTA Implementation & Trade Facilitation

About the role

The Economic Commission for Africa seeks an International Consultant to accelerate the implementation of the IGAD AfCFTA Regional Implementation Strategy. The role focuses on strengthening private‑sector participation and building customs capacity across the IGAD region, working remotely with periodic travel to member states.

Key responsibilities

• Identify, mentor and support “AfCFTA Enterprise Champions” to trade under the AfCFTA framework.
• Coordinate with IGAD member states to deliver project outputs under two results: enterprise champion development and customs capacity strengthening.
• Design and deliver capacity‑building workshops for customs officials at borders and airports.
• Produce technical reports, monitoring tools and recommendations for policy makers.
• Facilitate knowledge exchange between large enterprises and MSMEs to promote regional value‑chain development.

Required profile

• Proven experience in trade facilitation, customs operations or regional economic integration projects.
• Strong understanding of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and IGAD regional dynamics.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple stakeholders and travel across the region.
• Excellent analytical, reporting and communication skills.
