Communications Intern

About the role

VIA Foundation seeks a Communications Intern to help tell the story of locally led restoration across Africa. Working from the Kigali office, you will build the foundation’s public voice by producing website and LinkedIn content, capturing champion stories, and supporting partnership and fundraising communications.

Key responsibilities

• Draft and edit short‑form content such as champion profiles, field stories, blog posts, newsletter copy, event recaps and social media captions in clear English.
• Gather photographs, quotes and stories from restoration sites and nurseries through the TerraMatch platform and turn them into publishable material.
• Create simple visual assets – social graphics, slide templates, one‑pagers and carousel posts – using Canva or similar tools, following brand guidelines.
• Maintain an organized library of photos, videos, logos, consent forms and approved messaging for rapid reuse.
• Support the preparation of communications products that strengthen fundraising and donor engagement, including impact snapshots, portfolio highlights and annual‑report sections.
• Maintain and update website content on via-foundation.org, adding news items, partner pages and vacancy postings.
• Prepare, schedule and publish posts on LinkedIn, monitor comments and messages and follow up as needed.
• Build and manage a mailing list of partners, keep a communications calendar and compile monthly analytics on website traffic and social‑media performance.

Required profile

• Completed bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, international development, environmental studies or a related field.
• Up to two years of experience in communications, content creation or digital media, including internships, student media or freelance work.
• Excellent written English with a portfolio or writing samples that demonstrate the ability to simplify complex or technical material.
• Fluent in written and spoken English and Kinyarwanda; French or Swahili is an asset.
• Right to work in Rwanda and ability to work onsite in Kigali, with occasional travel to field sites.

Required skills

• Canva (or similar design tool) for creating social graphics and templates.
• Adobe Creative Suite or CapCut for basic design and short‑form video editing.
• Website content‑management systems such as Drupal.
• Social‑media and web‑analytics tools for tracking performance.
• Photography and short‑form video capture for field storytelling.
