Water Treatment Engineer (Chemistry & Microbiology)

About the role

WASAC is seeking three qualified Water Treatment Engineers with expertise in chemistry and microbiology to join the Head Office laboratory team. The role involves ensuring safe drinking water by monitoring chemical and microbial quality, supporting treatment operations, and maintaining compliance with national and international standards.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct physical and chemical analyses of water (pH, turbidity, hardness, alkalinity, dissolved solids).
• Perform routine microbiological testing for bacteria, viruses and protozoa.
• Monitor microbial activity in treatment and distribution systems and investigate contamination events.
• Operate, maintain and troubleshoot water and wastewater treatment facilities.
• Improve process efficiency while reducing chemical usage and operational costs.
• Ensure compliance with WHO guidelines and local water quality regulations.
• Maintain accurate laboratory records, prepare technical reports and regulatory documentation.
• Conduct audits, inspections and risk assessments related to waterborne diseases.
• Design and execute experiments, analyse data and support innovation.
• Supervise analysts and technical officers, and ensure laboratory safety protocols are followed.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Microbiology, Biology, Public Health, Chemical Engineering or a related field.
• Minimum of 3 years relevant experience in water quality analysis or treatment.
• Knowledge of regulatory standards and water quality compliance requirements.
• Familiarity with laboratory testing procedures and reporting systems.
