Peri‑operative Nurse

About the role

The Peri‑operative Nurse provides safe, high‑quality nursing care to patients undergoing surgical and invasive procedures in Burera District. Working within a multidisciplinary surgical team, the nurse is responsible for pre‑operative assessment, intra‑operative advocacy, and post‑operative monitoring.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement peri‑operative nursing care plans across pre‑, intra‑ and post‑operative phases.
• Conduct comprehensive pre‑operative assessments, verify consent, investigations and safety checklists.
• Monitor vital signs and intra‑operative parameters, escalating concerns to the surgical or anesthesia team.
• Assist surgeons and anesthetists during procedures, ensuring aseptic technique and patient safety.
• Provide post‑operative care including pain management, wound and drain management, and early detection of complications.

Required profile

• Master of Science in peri‑operative nursing with a valid Rwandan nursing license.
• Minimum 5 years of clinical experience in peri‑operative or surgical nursing, preferably in a teaching or referral hospital.
• Experience in clinical teaching, mentorship and supervision of nursing staff and students.
• Familiarity with Rwanda national clinical protocols, infection‑prevention standards and surgical safety checklists.
• Fluent in English and Kinyarwanda; French is an advantage.

Required skills

• Strong clinical assessment, critical‑thinking and problem‑solving in peri‑operative patient management.
• Basic computer skills and ability to use electronic medical record and theatre documentation systems.
