Peri-operative Nurse

About the role

The Peri‑operative Nurse delivers safe, evidence‑based nursing care to patients undergoing surgical and invasive procedures. Working within a multidisciplinary surgical team, the nurse is involved in pre‑operative assessment, intra‑operative patient advocacy, and post‑operative monitoring.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive pre‑operative assessments, verify consent, investigations and safety checklists.
• Monitor vital signs and intra‑operative parameters, respond to changes and alert the surgical or anaesthesia team.
• Assist surgeons and anaesthetists in the operating theatre while maintaining aseptic technique.
• Provide post‑operative care including pain management, wound and drain management, and early detection of complications.
• Educate patients and families on surgical procedures, recovery expectations and discharge instructions.
• Maintain accurate peri‑operative documentation and complete surgical safety checklists.
• Participate in adverse event reporting, root‑cause analysis and continuous quality‑improvement initiatives.
• Support sterilisation, maintenance and inventory of surgical instruments and equipment.
• Mentor new staff and students during clinical rotations.
