Neonatal Nurse

About the role

The Neonatal Nurse provides safe, high-quality, evidence-based care to newborns, including preterm and ill infants, within a multidisciplinary maternal and newborn health team. Based in the Burera District clinical services unit, the role focuses on comprehensive assessment, monitoring, and management of neonatal conditions while supporting families and contributing to continuous quality improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement and evaluate individualized neonatal nursing care plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
• Conduct thorough neonatal assessments on admission and throughout stay, identifying risks and complications early.
• Monitor vital signs and clinical parameters, respond to deterioration and escalate to medical staff as needed.
• Assist with neonatal procedures, ensuring aseptic technique and patient safety.
• Provide thermoregulation, feeding support, infection prevention, and respiratory support monitoring.
• Educate mothers and families on newborn care, danger signs and discharge instructions.
• Maintain accurate documentation, including nursing records and monitoring charts.
• Participate in adverse event reporting, root-cause analysis and quality-improvement initiatives.
• Manage and inventory neonatal equipment such as incubators, radiant warmers and oxygen delivery devices.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse qualified to practice in neonatal care.
• Experience working in a neonatal or NICU setting.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong communication skills for patient education and teamwork.
