Medical Surgical Nurse

About the role

The Medical Surgical Nurse provides safe, high‑quality, evidence‑based nursing care to patients in the medical‑surgical ward of the Burera District facility. Working within an interdisciplinary team, the nurse is responsible for comprehensive patient assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement and evaluate patient nursing care plans in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
• Conduct thorough nursing assessments on admission and throughout the care continuum, documenting findings.
• Monitor vital signs, clinical parameters and response to treatment, escalating changes promptly.
• Provide pre‑ and post‑operative care, including wound and drain management and monitoring for surgical complications.
• Participate in adverse event reporting, root‑cause analysis and ward‑level quality‑improvement projects.
• Mentor new staff and students, and contribute to in‑service training and case presentations.

Required profile

• Registered nurse with a valid license; Masters in Medical Surgical Nursing or equivalent preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of clinical nursing experience in surgery, preferably in a teaching or referral hospital.
• Fluent in English and Kinyarwanda; French knowledge is an advantage.
• Demonstrated experience in clinical teaching, mentorship and familiarity with Rwanda national clinical protocols.

Required skills

• Proficiency in basic computer skills and electronic medical record systems.
• Ability to conduct basic data analysis.
• Strong clinical assessment, critical‑thinking and problem‑solving abilities.
