Medical Surgical Nurse

About the role

The Medical Surgical Nurse provides safe, high‑quality, evidence‑based nursing care to patients admitted to the medical‑surgical ward in Burera District. Working within an interdisciplinary team, the nurse is responsible for comprehensive assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care, while also contributing to clinical teaching, mentorship and continuous quality improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement and evaluate individualized nursing care plans in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
• Conduct thorough nursing assessments on admission and throughout the care continuum, documenting findings accurately.
• Monitor vital signs, clinical parameters and response to treatment, escalating changes promptly.
• Assist physicians and surgeons during examinations and procedures, providing pre‑ and post‑operative care including wound and drain management.
• Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatment plans, medications and discharge instructions.
• Participate in adverse event reporting, root‑cause analysis and ward‑level quality improvement projects.
• Mentor new staff and students, deliver in‑service training and engage in continuing professional development.
• Maintain effective communication during rounds, handovers and care‑coordination meetings.

Required profile

• Master's degree in Medical Surgical Nursing.
