Medical Surgical Nurse

About the role

The Medical Surgical Nurse delivers safe, high‑quality, evidence‑based care to patients admitted to the medical‑surgical ward in Burera District. Working within an interdisciplinary team, the nurse assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates comprehensive patient care while supporting junior staff and contributing to quality improvement initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
• Perform thorough nursing assessments on admission and throughout the patient’s stay, documenting findings accurately.
• Monitor vital signs, clinical parameters, and response to treatment; promptly report changes to physicians.
• Assist physicians and surgeons during examinations and procedures, providing pre‑ and post‑operative care, wound and drain management, and monitoring for surgical complications.
• Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions.
• Participate in adverse event reporting, root‑cause analysis, and ward‑level quality improvement projects.
• Maintain equipment inventory, report deficiencies, and support accreditation preparation.
• Mentor new staff and students, deliver in‑service training, and engage in continuing professional development.
• Communicate effectively during daily rounds, handovers, and care‑coordination meetings.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Medical Surgical Nursing.
