Accountant

About the role

The Accountant will maintain accurate financial records, manage daily financial operations, and ensure compliance with institutional policies, tax regulations, and public accounting standards. This position supports the Institute's fiscal integrity across academic, research, and operational functions.

Key responsibilities

• Record financial transactions, maintain the general ledger, and reconcile bank and cash accounts.
• Manage accounts receivable (tuition fees, grants) and accounts payable, processing vendor invoices and payment vouchers.
• Coordinate monthly payroll, calculate salaries, allowances, deductions, and remit statutory taxes.
• Assist in preparing budgets, financial forecasts, monthly/annual statements, and variance reports.
• Support internal and external audits, maintain audit trails, and reconcile project/grant accounts.
• Participate in internal control design, asset inventories, and financial system upgrades.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration; master’s degree is a plus.
• 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in higher education, health, or non‑profit sectors.
• Age between 30 and 45 years.
• Progress towards CPA or ACCA certification is strongly desirable.

Required skills

• Proficiency with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage, or institutional ERP systems.
• Strong knowledge of IFRS and GAAP accounting principles.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills for data analysis and financial modeling.
• Familiarity with Electronic Billing Machine (EBM) systems and Rwanda tax filing procedures.
