Utility Operator

About the role

The Utility Operator will manage the operation, monitoring and maintenance of clean and black utility systems at BioNTech’s mRNA vaccine production site in Kigali. The role supports preventive maintenance, calibrations and system qualifications while ensuring compliance with cGxP and GMP standards.

Key responsibilities

• Operate, monitor and maintain utility systems such as purified water, water for injection, clean steam, compressed air, nitrogen and HVAC.
• Perform routine checks, sampling, preventive maintenance and calibrations.
• Respond to alarms, deviations and emergency situations, escalating and troubleshooting as needed.
• Document activities, support audits and inspections, and ensure accurate records in line with GMP and EHS regulations.
• Conduct root‑cause analysis for instrumentation and calibration failures and implement corrective actions.

Required profile

• Diploma or degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering or equivalent technical qualification.
• 2–5 years of experience in utility operations within the pharmaceutical or FMCG industry.
• Knowledge of system operation, basic maintenance and GMP requirements for utility systems.
• Ability to work at heights, wear PPE and respond to emergencies.

Required skills

• Proficiency in reading P&IDs and technical manuals.
• Experience with SAP PM, COMOS or CMX maintenance software.
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
